Appalachian
Native Plants Inc. is dedicated to demonstrating and providing education in preservation, propagation and production methods of Native Ornamental plant species
and sustainable/organic food, as well as supporting the regional agricultural economy.
Preservation and production of Native Ornamental
plants will be accomplished in the following ways:
1. Through the process of exploring for, mapping and documenting
notable native plant specimens and populations in the wild and in gardens we will aid in the preservation of native plants.
2. By collecting seed from selected specimens, producing seedling populations and then selecting
the “superior” forms from those seedling populations a group of “Stock” plants will be generated and
used in a display garden and further plant production.
3. By networking and sharing plant material and information on production
methods with regional growers.
4. We will offer for sale the best quality native plant liners for
regional farmers to grow on into finished landscape material.
5. WEB based marketing of the plants will be a central aspect of the business.
Propagation
and production of food crops will be accomplished by:
1. Sourcing seeds through farmer cooperatives and other seed saving
outfits.
2. Organically producing a diversity of fruit and vegetable transplants.
3.
Networking and sharing
with regional growers.
4. Establishing a farmer cooperative in the county.
5.
Developing marketing
strategies and entering new markets for and with growers.
Support of the regional
agricultural economy will be accomplished in these sustainable ways:
1.
Providing education,
develop, and assisting with implementation of whole farm planning strategies.
2. Making information and technical assistance available in implementation of plant production utilizing Integrated Pest Management decision making.
3.
Demonstrating season
extension techniques.
4. Offering workshops involving approaches to economic viability,
social well-being, and environmental stability of agricultural practices.
5.
Leading a
Community Food Project.
